Tasting Menus & Why I Love Them

I like variety when it comes to food. If you have ever gone out to have dinner with me, you’re aware I will choose multiple plates. I sound crazy to some but I can’t help it. I love having a taste of different flavors; salty, sweet, spicy, and savory. I’m also big on textures. I love crunchy breading on calamari or the chewiness of takoyaki. I want it all. This past weekend, I had the opportunity to try out Charlotte’s fall tasting menu and it reminds me of why I fell in love with the art of cooking and the culinary world.

When we go out to eat with our friends, a fancy restaurant is typically at the bottom of the list. We normally want something quick, easy, non-stuffy atmosphere, and more bang for our buck. But sometimes, it’s nice for a change of scenery. We have to remember, chefs are artists too and want to showcase their craft! And what better way to experience what they have to offer than checking out their tasting menus.

I’m not saying to shell out thousands of dollars to have a meal that you won’t care about but maybe treat yourself or a friend to a nice, quality meal. A great way to try out a fine dining restaurant is trying their tasting menu. Tasting menus are curated specially by the chefs and will typically include seasonal ingredients. Some dishes will mirror ones that already exist on their menu or they will create something new and innovative.

If you do your research, you may be able to see the menu of what you’ll be tasting. However, some locations will just simply list they are doing a tasting menu and it will be a surprise to the guest once the courses begin to arrive!

Tasting menus take the work out of deciding what you want to eat. I know I can be indecisive and want a lot because I am always torn between trying something new and eating what I know. And I think it’s fun to have a girl’s night or take your date somewhere you both can try something new and have an experience together! I also love when the food keeps coming. I mean, who wouldn’t want to have endless plates just being brought to the table!

Something that you can order alongside your regular tasting menu is a wine pairing! Working with the Food and Beverage Director, the chefs and team will help elevate your dining experience by choosing the best wines to complement each dish. I didn’t choose the wine pairing this time but if I was going out with friends or on a date, this would be a fun addition. I think it adds to the full dining experience. I’ve mentioned this in a previous post before but when you’re eating a meal at these types of restaurants, it’s all about how everything complements one another. You can take a bite of something alone and it will taste good but when you eat everything together and add the different sauces and components onto your fork and take a bite, it tastes even better.

When I hear people talk about tasting menus/fine dining, they always say, “portions are too small,” or “It’s way overpriced for what you get.” I get it. I know what you mean and that is a valid point. Keep in mind the price you pay is for the quality/type of ingredients being used and as well as the tasting experience. These types of items and dishes are not regularly found on your typical menus. These are also not your everyday dining options. You’re not eating here every day and you most likely chose your restaurant based off of a special occasion, their view, or wanting to try something new! When dining here, you think about the experience as a whole, from when you check-in at the valet to when you receive your last course.

I don’t do these too often but when you find the right people to join you on these food experiences, it makes it all worthwhile. The food/ingredients themselves are conversation starters and it’s such a fun way to just have a great time with friends and family. The next time you’re in need of a new way to spice up date night or feel adventurous, check out some of your local spots and see if they are offering anything special besides their regular menu. If it’s not a tasting menu, it can be an Omakase at a sushi restaurant or wine pairing, or limited-time menu options! It’s time to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.
